As parents we all know too well that potty training/toilet training can be a very frustrating and challenging time for both parents and children.......as parents of "special needs" kids we also have found out that most traditional methods of toilet/potty training do not work......and we are hoping that someone can come up with a system that will benefit these very special youngsters

WHAT WE AT TINKLETOONZ ARE DOING

About a year ago a therapist who works with autistic children told us about the success she was having in toilet training the children with whom she was working........she took the "musical sensor" from our TinkleToonz potty and attached it to the kids underwear. The instant the child "wet" his pants the sensor would begin to play music.......this alerted her (or the parent) to the fact the child had "gone" in his pants. The child would immediately be taken to the toilet....and because of the immediate response, they would eventually associate and connect the fact of peeing and going to the toilet. Without this immediate notification sometimes an hour or so would have elapsed without knowing that he had peed.....and hence the child would not learn to make the connection.
Through this immediate repetitiveness, toilet training times were shortened considerably.

WHAT WAS THE NEXT STEP FOR US

We decided to develop and manufacture a "special needs" training pant that had our musical sensor built right into the pant....a "musical pant" so to speak. Our initial thought was to make them out of cloth so they would be reusable and washable......while the concept worked well, it became apparent that they were very inconvenient.....since most kids are at some kind of school all day long and schools do not have washers and dryers, it just was not practical.....we needed a disposable training pant.

THE STAGE WE ARE AT NOW

To accommodate the need to have a "disposable" pant and be able to reuse the musical sensor each time we have come up with a "two-part" pant:

1. The outer part will be a leakproof outer shell or liner.....this will contain the sensor....and this part will be reusable and washable.
2. The "inner" part will be a disposable throw away insert or "pad", made from absorbent material and will fit neatly inside the outer liner (and actually lay on top of the musical sensor). When the pad gets wet....the music plays....you take your child to the toilet. Then inner pad is thrown out....and a new inner pad is placed inside the liner, ready for your child to use again

WHAT CAN YOU DO WHILE WAITING FOR THESE PANTS?

We have always manufactured our sensors exclusively for use in our musical potty...but because of what we are doing in the training pants we have decided to sell our musical sensors to parents to try it on their own....here are a few tips: If you are using regular childs underwear you could attach the sensor to the front...when it gets wet..music plays. If you are also using an outer "leakproof" liner along with the underwear you could attach the sensor to the inside of the liner (velcro will work). If you are using a disposable pant such as Pull Ups or Huggies etc... you can place the sensor in these....simply make a small cut in the front of the pant...cutting the slit on the outside. Simply push the sensor into the pant (silver side facing your child)....the material inside easily holds the sensor in place....when pants get wet...music plays. Then simply remove the sensor (throw out the pants)...and put sensor into a new pair of Pull Ups or Huggies. If you are using cloth diapers the sensor can be attached the same as directed for regular underwear.

The musical sensors are a one-piece self contained device activated by moisture...you do not have to buy any batteries. They are 1.5 inches in diameter and .5 of an inch thick. We guarantee the sensor for ONE YEAR (we replace for free). Under normal use the sensor lasts aproximately 2 years - and we have one in our office that still plays after 8 years....
